About the Grotius Centre
The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, named after the father of public international law and one of the most illustrious alumni of Leiden Law School– Hugo Grotius – hosts scholars and students of public international law from all over the world. It has offices in Leiden and in The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice.
About Leiden University
Leiden University (founded in 1575) is one of Europe's leading international research-intensive universities. This prominent position gives our graduates an advantage when applying for positions both within and outside the academic world
Leiden, a True Student City
Leiden, with its 116,000 inhabitants, is a medium-sized city that provides an attractive living environment. The city is just 15 km from the North Sea coast, and is favourably located for easy access to such major cities as The Hague, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht.
Street scene
The presence of thousands of students and staff has a major impact on the street scene, cultural life and economic diversity. These are what make Leiden a true university city. There are many opportunities for students and staff to get together: during lectures, at the student associations or sports centre, or on the streets and in cafés.
University buildings
Leiden does not have a campus where all the university buildings and activities are concentrated. The University’s premises permeate the city. The historic city centre lives and breathes the University: the Academy Building – the oldest and most defining of the University’s premises – the Observatory and the Gravensteen all form an integral part of the city’s architecture. The University’s new buildings, such as the Faculty of Medicine’s new teaching and research complex, also play a part in the city’s architecture. Some of the historic buildings, such as Plexus Student Centre – a former workshop -, have been renovated. The Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratory, where Nobel Prize winner Heike Kamerlingh Onnes carried out his pioneering research, is now home to the Leiden Law School.
All these buildings are within walking distance of the Academy Building, the historic heart of the University. The entrance to the Academy Building also gives access to the centuries-old Hortus Botanicus, a centre for botanical research and a much-loved green oasis within the city centre.
Leiden, museum city
No other city in the Netherlands has as many museums as Leiden. Major museums such as the National Museum of Antiquities, Naturalis and the National Museum of Ethnicity, but also smaller ones such as SieboldHuis, the Lakenhal and the Prentenkabinet, can all be found close to the city centre. Many of the museum collections originated in the University; without the University, Leiden’s museums would not have come into being.
The Hague, International City of Peace and Justice
‘Legal capital of the world.’ It was no one other than the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, who uttered these words to describe the unique position of The Hague. The Hague’s current role as host to international organisations and the international community is part of a tradition dating back more than 750 years. Read more about The Hague’s history as the City of Peace and Justice.

Frontiers of Children’s Rights in the ASEAN Region
Depok & Jakarta, 23 – 27 January 2017
Join Leiden-Asia Year 2017, putting Leiden firmly on the international map as one of the world’s leading knowledge hubs on Asia
International Children’s Rights are still a relatively new concept, with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) entering into force only 25 years ago. Although the CRC is an instrument of international law and children’s rights should in principle be universal, many of the countries that ratified the CRC submitted certain reservations. In order to minimize problems of unequal treatment or discrimination caused by these reservations, it is advisable to look at implementation, impact and effect of the CRC at a regional level, in addition to the international and national level. Especially now, with growing mobility and migration, also by minors and young people, a regional approach improving harmonization and uniformity, will be beneficial. This regional edition of the Leiden Summer School Frontiers of Children’s Rights, organized with the Faculty of Law of the University of Indonesia and the Human Rights Center of Ateneo de Manila University, enables participants to engage with international children’s rights and topical regional issues affecting children, families and communities.
Programme
Frontiers of Children’s Rights provides a comprehensive children’s rights course, which takes a close look at contemporary children’s rights issues from a legal perspective accompanied by reflections from other academic disciplines, legal systems, local perceptions and realities. Leading academic and professional experts in the field of children’s rights, international law and other relevant disciplines offer inspiring and interactive lectures, seminars and workshops. Themes taught include issues of children in relation to justice, global issues, family care and digital realities.

Global Awareness
Marlowe Entrett Professor of Entertainment, Copyright, & Trademark Law at Tribute Institute and partner at Kline, Martin, Shoenfeld discusses his work advocating for fairness in the media. Dr. Entrett is provocative by nature and has often insisted on wearing a Batman t shirt when speaking in public. He uses the masked hero as a foil to present ideas on the legal challenges faced by artists and writers who confront the growing extreme conditions demanded by the large entertainment complexes. Batman apparel and quotations are only part of the philosophy of superheroes, which has come to dominate modern celebrity addicted culture and Entrett makes use of these symbols to enlighten and motivate his students. Clothes may make the man according to O'Henry, and Batman apparel informs the message in a way that young people find unintimidating and fun. "Find your inner Batman and let him loose!"
